RainbreakerZ Product History
This is the story of how our product was developed. We had installed our competitor’s product - a louver type impact baffle design that is a gutterless rain gutter design - on our house in place of our conventional raingutters and downspouts. One day we noticed that this product still produced some minor trenching in our flowerbed. The next time it rained, we were out in the rain evaluating why the louver type impact baffle design still caused the soil erosion. We noticed that the water flows off the roofing shingles as large drops occurring at the same locations due to the overlapping roofing shingle design. The large drops were then impacting on the top surface of the louver as designed. But the resulting splashing to create the irregular smaller droplet sizes also caused some of the droplets to impact on the bottom side of the next impact baffle located forward and above the working baffle. The drops accumulated or agglomerated on the bottom edge of the baffle to reconstruct a large drop size at the same locations under the shingle drops. These reconstructed large drops continually impacting at the same spots on the ground caused the soil erosion. We thought there had to be a better way.
Eureka! How about using a screen to split the large water drops into smaller drops? To test out the idea, we took our window screen into the shower, started the shower dripping like it was coming off the roofing shingles, inserted the window screen under the showerhead drops and it worked ! The sound of the drops hitting the bathtub decreased noticeably as well. This was due to the screen dividing the large drops into a great number of smaller droplets. In addition, by slanting the screen downward, the formed droplets were also directed in the same direction as the slant. Wow ! We had a positive way of forming smaller droplets and a self-cleaning feature as well (leaves would not accumulate on the slanted screen). Whoever said that the best ideas come in the shower was right. We received a patent for our dissatisfaction with an existing product.
If a window screen was the original idea, how did the product end up as a perforated plate?
Discussions with friends and relatives about the sturdiness of a flexible plastic screen and the cost of a window screen type frame led to a re-evaluation of the product. The second eureka moment came in front of the computer. I saw the computer speakers with its perforated holes that led us to think about using a rigid perforated plate with tiny holes. After obtaining a metal plate sample with the largest open hole area possible with the smallest hole size for a standard perforation, we went back to the shower to test out the theory. Lo and behold, it worked like the screen! But a surprise - the perforated plate had to be slanted upward (in the opposite direction compared to the screen) to direct the droplets in the same direction as the screen! Further analysis of this phenomenon led to a second patent application.
What We Do
Ch. E. Incorporated started as a brick and mortars retailer of greeting cards, candy, cigarettes, stationery, newspapers and lottery tickets. Later we added engineering services for the petroleum and chemicals industry into the mix since one of the founders was a chemical engineer. The company’s initials in Ch. E. Incorporated is commonly thought to represent Chemical Engineer but in reality it is an abbreviation for Chinese Entrepreneur. We plan to morph the company into an innovative invention company as we have eliminated the brick and mortars retailing operation and headed into the internet as a virtual company with outsourced manufacturing facilities. The innovative company plans to create other KISS Products for the consumer.
